Jose Mateus

Jose started playing tennis at an early age and was a top national junior. Jose competed nationally throughout his junior years. From 17 years old he started playing team tennis in Germany where he played against other top juniors as well as established seniors from around the world. At this point, he also started doing a little bit of part-time coaching in Germany. These experiences helped Jose enormously to mature as a player and gave him a good grounding for his future as a coach.

In 1994 after a good run in an ATP Challenger event in Portugal, Jose gained an ATP ranking which he held for the next 12 months. Jose has represented Hertfordshire at both junior and senior level, being ranked number 1 in the county as a junior throughout all levels. He has also competed against some top ATP players including former British Number 1, Tim Henman.

Jose started coaching in 1996, and developed from a very good tennis player into someone who could deliver that knowledge to players of all levels and standards. He has been coaching at Berkhamsted since 2006, where he continues to love coaching players of all ages and abilities.
